High Fibre Ingredients: Unlike cows and sheep, dogs are not able to digest significant quantities of dietary fibre to obtain calories but it can have significant physical benefits in the dog’s digestive system. The reason that dogs cannot digest fibre is that it consists of glucose molecules bonded by beta 1,4 linkages and dogs do not have the necessary amylase enzyme to break the beta links. (Cows and sheep get round the problem by having a large rumen which contains bacteria that are rich in the enzyme).
