Technical Focus
Food digestibility in young dogs - Rapidly growing young dogs have higher requirements for energy and nutrients than adult dogs but have less digestive capacity and smaller mouths and teeth. This is especially true of more miniature and toy breeds. It is, therefore, imperative that the digestibility of the diet ingredients is as high as possible and that the quality of the ingredients is also optimal. However, it is essential to remember that every dog’s feed conversion efficiency is different. Therefore, owners should assess body condition regularly and adjust the amount of food fed to maintain the ideal body condition throughout growth. Overfeeding a young growing dog can lead to hyperplastic obesity, which can lead to health problems later in life.
